Michael Lawrence - The Music Shop

Knowledge, friendliness and genuine expertise recur throughout accounts of visits to this Hull music shop. Customers consistently highlight the helpfulness of staff, with Mike and Glynn named for taking time to explain options and solve problems, whether advising on a beginner's plectrum or discussing a guitar repair. A long-standing theme is the willingness to guide rather than simply sell: reviewers describe being given freedom to try instruments, sometimes with an amplifier provided, and one account recalls twenty minutes of telephone advice during lockdown when no purchase was possible.

Piano work features strongly, with Michael Lawrence described as a technician and restorer who talked a customer through renovating a sentimentally important instrument and was kind and considerate during home visits, while another buyer returned for a second grand piano. Buyers of guitars, ukuleles and a Les Paul mention the range on display and the care taken over setup and restringing. Lessons are also noted as something customers consider after visiting. The family-run character of the shop and the courteous, patient manner of its staff come up repeatedly, leaving the impression of a place where musical knowledge and personal attention matter more than a quick sale.
